The Art of Memory traces its roots to Simonides of Ancient Greece, who allegedly invented the "loci" method of memory after realizing that he spatially recalled the locations of all the people squashed by a roof cave in at a party he was attending. He stepped outside and the gods became angry and squashed all the guests. He was able to identify them all by remembering where they were standing before they went splat.

That is the rather gruesome, true legend of the origin of the Art of Memory. Weird, huh?
